Several years ago, I decided to give Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) a crack, a sport that has not only advanced my physical, mental, and personal growth, but has also equipped me with practical self-defence skills. Beyond these benefits, BJJ has offered me a strong sense of community and, as a woman, has been truly empowering. Here are the big benefits I have received from this amazing sport.
Mental Health Break
Practicing BJJ has been a game-changer for me. It's not just about learning self-defence or getting fit—it's brought me mental clarity and emotional resilience that I can use in everyday life. When I hit the mats, it's like stepping into a zone where adulting takes a backseat and my personal growth takes centre stage. I love being a parent, but it’s nice to leave responsibilities at home and focus on myself and BJJ is a form of meditation for me – it is a very technical sport that requires a lot of focus during training, as well as heightened awareness of one’s body.
Strong Community Connection
Being part of a tight-knit club has been an amazing experience. We've got each other's backs on and off the mats, and I've made some solid friendships that feel like family. The best part? It's a place where being a woman isn't a big deal—I'm just another member of the crew, smashing goals and supporting each other every step of the way. Here is where choosing the right gym for you is very important, club values are everything! I am fortunate to be a member of a club that fosters a healthy culture - we look after our training partners physically and emotionally (egos are left at home), and I have never felt out of place due to my gender.
Real World Confidence
BJJ draws out a unique confidence that extends beyond the mats. Through its emphasis on technique, control, and situational awareness, it equips those who train with the ability to remain calm and composed in threatening situations. This skill isn't just about physical self-defence; it's about cultivating a mental resilience that allows one to assess, strategize, and respond effectively under pressure.
Increased Problem Solving Skills
BJJ hones critical thinking, as every roll on the mats requires strategic planning, quick decision-making and the ability to adapt to ever changing circumstances with the correct technical and physical response. BJJ has fostered a mindset of problem-solving and innovation in me that other aspects of my life (eg. home, career) haven't been able to as you’re constantly thinking on your feet.
Technique Really Does Matter!
You may want to take BJJ up for personal growth or self-defence but have concerns about the size and strength differences as a female training in a male dominated sport, however, BJJ consistently proves that technique is more effective than sheer strength. While strength does help, BJJ teaches tactical moves and leverage to handle opponents, no matter their size or strength. Pressure – whether it's how we position ourselves or control our opponent – is crucial. By applying pressure wisely and using the right techniques, it is possible to neutralize bigger and stronger opponents. It's not just about brute force; it's about outsmarting and out manoeuvring them on the mat – mind over muscle!
In summary, training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a female has given me confidence and a space of my own to grow both personally and athletically. In a sport traditionally dominated by men, finding the right gym with a positive culture has been crucial. I've discovered a place where my gender doesn't define my capability, and where camaraderie and mutual respect flourish. BJJ has taught me invaluable self-defence skills and a mindset that extends far beyond the mats, making me feel empowered and capable in all aspects of life.
